His journey led him to the Himalayas, where he climbed 11 peaks before tackling the highest of them all, Mount Everest.

In 1953, he finally resolved to go all the way to create history. His team reached the South Peak in May 1953. Hillary and his companion, Tenzing Norgay, continued to the summit on May 29. Hillary made his country and the rest of the globe proud by standing 29,028 feet above sea level.
