5 Clever Winter Hiking and Backpacking Hacks

Are you one of those people who simply love hiking, even as cold blazing winds roar around you? We get it! Hiking in the winter season is even more fun because how else are you supposed to enjoy the weather? It’s an important experience that makes you appreciate natural beauty and Mother Nature even more.

If you have a thrill-seeking and adventurous spirit, the cold winter nights can’t derail you from heading out into the wild, and we love that!

Here are some hiking hacks that will be extremely handy on your next backpacking trip.

Read up on trail conditions

Read up on trail conditions

Even the most experienced hikers don’t just head into the wilderness with no plan or without mapping their trail. When you decide which park or trail you want to explore, make sure to check out the forecasted weather and trail conditions.

This will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of snowfall, ice or obstructions on your usual path etc.

Drink plenty of water

Drinking water in colder temperatures can be challenging but you need to keep reminding yourself to do it, or you could end up dehydrated. You need water to help you avoid muscle soreness and unbearable fatigue later.

Make sure you take sips and keep your water bottle in an insulated tube cover. Don’t forget to munch on healthy, high-calorie snacks along the way for a boost of energy to brace the winds.

Bring the right gear

If you’re expecting snowy trails then wearing the right shoes is mandatory! You don’t want to slip and fall and hurt yourself on the trail because a) injuries hurt more in colder weather b) it’s also inconvenient.

Make sure your shoes have micro spikes, which can help you climb steeper, slippery slopes.

Layer up eventually

The trick is to layer up as you move along, because if you start off all bundled up in layers, you’re going to start sweating. Damp clothes are not very good at keeping you warm and they won’t dry off easily.

Therfore, consider starting with what you can bear and then eventually add on necessary layers. Pack extra hats and gloves as once wet, these can freeze easily.

Bring an appropriate sized backpack

Packing for a winter trip is tricky because there is a lot more equipment that you will need and you need more back-up supplies. These things tend to take up a lot of space as well. However, your bag can get too heavy and hard to carry everywhere.
