Becoming a good hiker requires time. You need to go on several hikes before you learn the tricks of the trade and become an expert on the trails!

If you love hiking as much as we do and want to get better at it, check out these useful tips:

1. Take time to enjoy the view

Hiking is a physical activity but it has many mental benefits too. The next time you go hiking, don’t rush through your journey; rather, spend some time soaking in the view.

Nature therapy is real! Take a moment to stop and just look around. Listen to the chirping of the birds, the rustling of the leaves and notice how it instantly calms your mind.

There’s something about immersing yourself in nature that you don’t get from living in the big city so use this to be truly present in your surroundings.

2. Know your trail

Amateur hikers make the mistake of jumping into a hike without understanding the trail and having a plan. Before you head out, take some time to get to know the trail and its surroundings.

Find out what the terrain is like, what’s sort of flora and fauna is in the area. The more familiar you are with the trail before you begin your hike, the more comfortable you will be later on.

Preparing yourself in advance allows you to avoid dangerous situations. The best hikers aren’t the ones that go on the most hikes, they’re the ones who are best prepared!

3. Take a friend with you

There are plenty of benefits of hiking alone, but when you’re making the transition from day-hikes to longer trips, it’s better to use the buddy-system.

Longer hikes require much more patience and stamina. It helps to have someone to talk to and support you when you feel like you can’t keep going.

For longer hikes, a friend isn’t just there to keep you company, they’re a necessity!

4. Dress appropriately

Your clothes should be the last of your troubles on a hike! A hiking trip is no time to be a fashionista so put away your fancy leather boots and pull out what’s most comfortable and appropriate for the weather and terrain.

Put on comfy running shoes or hiking boots with socks that don’t absorb moisture; the same goes for your shirt.

If you’re hiking in the winter wear layers, including wicking underwear, button-down shirts and parkas or jackets that can easily be taken off when needed.

5. Get the best hiking gear

Don’t undermine the importance of good hiking gear. Your backpack plays a very important role when hiking. Not only does it need to provide ample space for your belongings, it also needs to fit comfortably around your body without weighing you down.

At Light Hiking Gear we offer premium backpacking gear that consists of strong and spacious daypacks, UltraLites, StrongLites, hipbelts, hiking accessories and more!
